The complete guide to buying a Standard American Bully. The original class that defines the breed. Height, weight, pricing ($1,500-$3,500), breeder vetting, and what to check on any puppy.
Every other class of American Bully is measured against the Standard. Standing 17 to 20 inches at the shoulder, this is the class that breeders in the late 1980s and early 1990s set out to create: a medium-sized, heavily muscled companion dog with zero human aggression and a build that commands attention.
The Standard American Bully represents the most balanced option in the breed. Not as compact as a Pocket. Not as overwhelming as an XL. If you are a first-time buyer who wants the authentic bully experience without the extremes, the Standard class is where to start.
The ABKC breed standard places the Standard class at 17 to 20 inches at the withers for males and 16 to 19 inches for females. Weight typically falls between 45 and 90 pounds, depending on the dog’s bone density and muscle mass. Unlike the Classic, the Standard carries a heavier, more exaggerated build with a wider chest and thicker neck.
In the US market, a Standard American Bully from an established breeder runs $1,500 to $3,500. Named bloodlines like Gottiline, Razor’s Edge, and Remyline push prices toward the higher end. Dogs with show titles or from proven lineages can exceed $4,000.
UK prices mirror the US range closely at £1,500 to £3,500. The Standard class is not impacted by the UK XL Bully legislation. UK buyers importing from US breeders should budget an additional £500-£1,000 for shipping and vet clearance.
The Standard class handles family life exceptionally well. At 50 to 70 pounds, these dogs are sturdy enough to wrestle with older kids but not so large that they pose a risk to toddlers through sheer momentum. Their exercise needs are moderate (45 to 60 minutes daily), and they adapt to both houses and larger apartments.
Temperament is the Standard’s greatest asset. The ABKC breed standard explicitly calls for a confident, stable dog with no unprovoked aggression. Well-bred Standards consistently deliver on this.
Joint health is the primary concern. Hip and elbow dysplasia appear in the Standard class, though at lower rates than in XLs and XXLs. Responsible breeders screen both parents with OFA hip and elbow evaluations before producing a litter. Ask for these certificates and verify them.
Skin allergies also run through certain Standard bloodlines. Environmental and food sensitivities can cause chronic itching, hot spots, and secondary infections.
The American Bully Buyer’s Guide covers the Standard class in detail: ABKC size standards, fair US and UK price ranges broken down by bloodline and color, a breeder vetting script, a 12-point puppy health checklist, and a complete first-week-at-home plan.
